Dave is an Associate Professor of Medicine in Nephrology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. In my lab, we study the genetics of chronic kidney disease, primarily in populations with very high rates of kidney failure. We are learning how genetic variation in the APOL1 gene leads to high rates of chronic kidney disease in the Black population. We are also investigating a mysterious kidney disease called Mesoamerican Nephropathy that afflicts thousands of young men in Central America (particularly along the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua and El Salvador).
