Efrén González, MD, an Instructor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Retina Program and Director of the Ocular Oncology Service at Boston Children’s Hospital, performed the first plaque brachytherapy for an eye tumor at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center on June 14, 2021. Our team will also be offering brachytherapy to pediatric patients at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Dr. González and team also performed the first retinal gene therapy in Boston Children’s Hospital’s history, under an achromatopsia research protocol, on May 27, 2021. The team has also performed three gene therapy procedures for retinitis pigmentosa, under a separate research protocol.
