Dr. Flier is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and staff physician in the Center for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). Within IBD, she has a particular interest in patients transitioning from pediatric to adult GI providers. This vulnerable population requires a unique clinical approach that supports and encourages patient autonomy while still acknowledging a potential role for parents and caregivers. Dr. Flier has written and lectured on this topic and is committed to improving transition through research and advocacy.
Dr. Flier grew up in Newton and pursued her undergraduate training at Brandeis University before moving to NYC for medical school and internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai. While at Mount Sinai, she was fortunate to gain a vast clinical exposure to patients with Crohn’s and Colitis which spawned her intention to specialize in this area. She returned to Boston to complete her GI training at BIDMC and has been on faculty since 2010. In addition to seeing patients with IBD, Dr. Flier directs the Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program at BIDMC and is the Director of Quality and Safety for the GI Division. In recognition of her excellence in mentorship, patient care, and research innovation, she received the J. Thomas Lamont Award from the BIDMC Division of Gastroenterology in 2018 and 2024.
In addition to training the next generation of gastroenterologists, Dr. Flier is also heavily involved in medical student education. For over 10 years, she has co-directed the second-year Gastroenterology course for students enrolled in the Harvard-MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology (HST) at Harvard Medical School, where she also sits on the admissions committee. In 2019, she was honored with the Irving London Teaching Award for her contributions to the teaching of HST medical students.
An active member of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation, Dr. Flier was honored as the 2024 Humanitarian of the Year by the New England Chapter of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation for her broader commitment to improving the lives of patients with IBD.
