LGBTQ Health Awareness Week
March 24-30, 2019
Boston Children's is excited to announce a series of events supporting LGBTQ Health Awareness Week. These events are aimed at raising awareness of the health needs of LGBTQ children, youth, and families and promoting a welcoming hospital environment inclusive of the entire LGBTQ community.
Over the course of the week, there will be a number of opportunities for participants to better understand the challenges LGBTQ patients face in the healthcare system, learn about exciting and important work underway in both clinical and research environments, and connect with valuable resources supporting LGBTQ patients and families. All are welcome to attend and there is no registration required.
2019 LGBTQ Health Awareness Week: Schedule of Events
Clinical Care Grand Rounds
Tuesday, March 26 from 8:00 am to 9:00 am
Folkman Auditorium – Enders Research Building
Presenters: Allison Scobie-Carroll, Coleen Williams, Katharine Thomson and Sarah Pilcher
Moderator: Nikki Tennermann
This multidisciplinary panel will describe patient care models, employee training, and policy initiatives directly impacting the care of our LGBTQ patients and families. Dr. Katharine Thomson, of the Psychiatry Consult Service, Dr. Col Williams, of the Gender Management Service (GeMS), Sarah Pilcher, Nurse Practitioner in the Gender Management Service (GeMS) and Allison Scobie-Carroll, of Social Work and Family Services will share current practices and ongoing efforts to improve LGBTQ patient care. This session will be moderated by Nikki Tennermann, LICSW, Administrative Director for the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion.
Research Poster Session
Thursday, March 28 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Gallery Walk with Researchers from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm
Patient Entertainment Center – Boston Children’s Pavilion Building
This event will showcase a sampling of the impressive work currently underway by the Boston Children’s clinical and research teams. Posters featured will examine clinical care and treatment for LGBTQ patients, challenges facing LGBTQ youth and the impact on their health and well-being, and the positive impact of staff training on creating a more welcoming environment for LGBTQ patients and families. There will be a gallery walk from 1:00 to 2:00 with researchers present for discussion.
Research Grand Rounds
Thursday, March 28 from 8:30 am to 9:30 am

Presenters: Sabra Katz-Wise, Allegra Gordon, Yee-Ming Chan, and Ariella Tabaac
Moderator: Camila Mateo
This panel discussion will provide information about some of the exciting research that Boston Children’s Hospital researchers are doing with sexual and gender minority populations. Drs. Sabra Katz-Wise, Allegra Gordon, Yee-Ming Chan, and Ari Tabaac will discuss their ongoing projects and share the ways in which their research has helped improve the care of LGBTQ youth and adults. The panel will be facilitated by Dr. Camila Mateo, Special Advisor for Trainee Affairs in the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion. Bring your curiosity and your questions!

These lobby events provide access to resources and information for patients, families and employees, while raising awareness about the challenges LGBTQ youth continue to face and the impact on their health and well-being.
