Currently my work focuses on recovery and long-term outcomes for patients and families after critical illness and COVID-19. I am engaged in both research and clinical work to develop better approaches to help these patients regain their quality of life.

I am also involved in work to improving the value and humanism in healthcare delivered to people experiencing critical illness, chronic illness, and those approaching the end of life. Value refers to the outcomes that matter to patients and families, relative to the cost of achieving those outcomes. A portion of my research examines value in the intensive care unit, seeking to understand variation in care, cost, waste, and opportunities to improve the care patients receive by eliminating low-value care. I am also interested in improving the end-of-life experience of patients with serious illness, in particular aligning the care patients receive with their values, and improving the use of palliative rather than intensive therapies at the end of life.

Finally, I collaborate with colleagues to analyze highly detailed intensive care unit data, with the aim of improving the quality, safety, and effectiveness of critical care through machine learning and biomedical engineering applications. Overall, I hope to help develop a smarter, kinder, and more effective healthcare delivery system through my research, medical education efforts, and clinical work.
