Christopher Ashwood, Ph.D.

Glycomics Core Director

I am a PhD scientist specializing in glycomics and glycoproteomics at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC)/Harvard Medical School.

During my graduate studies with Dr. Nicolle Packer, I developed expertise in the acquisition of glycan structural data from fungal, and mammalian glycoproteins using porous graphitized carbon (PGC)-based liquid chromatography (LC) mass spectrometry (MS). In addition, I have cultivated expertise in the analysis of the data generated by these experiments, developing normalization methods to improve the throughput of automated processing and therefore accuracy of structure annotations. During my post-doctoral training, I have applied these skills towards biological systems, specifically in the areas of stem cell and cardiac biology and expanded my bioinformatic skillset as it relates to improving the analysis of glycan and glycopeptide data. A major theme of my research efforts to date is to develop automated analytical workflows for the characterization and quantification of glycans. To date, my scientific contributions include 11 peer reviewed publications, of which I am first author on 4. I have received a prestigious Postdoctoral Career Development Award from the American Society for Mass Spectrometry.
