Last week, Harvard Medical School Professor of Otolaryngology and Director of the Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery Division at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Dr. Gregory Randolph, alongside Dr. Peter Angelos of the University of Chicago and Dr. Whitney Liddy of Northwestern University, hosted the fourth annual Intraoperative Neural Monitoring (IONM) Certification Course for Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery at Mass. Eye and Ear.
As the only course of its kind in the U.S., it aims to provide guidance to employ IONM in a standardized format and encourage its use in surgical decision making. The course is interactive and provides one-on-one intensive surgical, anesthesia, and monitoring instruction. It includes lectures, an observation in the OR with a real-time demonstration of IONM set-up and applications during surgery, and interactive case discussions with a simulation model.
This year, the two-day course brought people from all over the U.S. as well a China and Turkey to Boston. The next course is scheduled for February 8–9, 2019.
