CERTAIN: Advancing Medical Education

CERTAIN is dedicated to enhancing education for medical trainees and faculty. Our primary focus is establishing pre-clinical proficiency—an objective demonstration of “readiness to perform” prior to clinical exposure.

Training Sessions & Courses

CERTAIN is leading in the development and delivery of innovative, multimodal training programs for medical learners, enhancing skills and knowledge across various procedural areas:

  • Training sessions and courses: offered for various medical learners, including CA-1 residents and departments like Nephrology and Hospital Medicine.

  • Multimodal teaching approach: incorporating online modules, in-person lectures, case discussions, and hands-on practice.

  • Training in the dedicated Anesthesia Skills Lab: focusing on procedures such as intubations, ultrasound-guided vascular access, and echocardiography.

  • Dr. Ruma Bose was awarded a grant from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research to create a mixed-reality rescue ultrasound curriculum specifically for senior residents.

Pedagogy

CERTAIN is pioneering innovative teaching methods, including:

  • Online Journal Club Curriculum created by Dr. Daniel Walsh to foster intraoperative teaching, along with interactive branched chain learning modules for various subspecialties.
  • Peer-Assisted Teaching led by Dr. Matyal, where senior residents mentor junior residents through case discussions and hands-on learning.
  • In-Situ Simulation Training for faculty and residents, spearheaded by Dr. Nadav Levy.

Technology & Innovation

CERTAIN is at the forefront of integrating technology into medical education:

  • VR and AR Initiatives: Collaborating with simulation companies to create VR simulators for teaching procedural skills like transthoracic echocardiography and ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia, as well as teamwork skills.

  • Research Support: Supporting innovative studies, including Dr. Haobo Ma's project on using 3D printing for teaching fiberoptic intubation, which received a SEAd grant.

  • Collaboration with Interventional Radiology: Engaging in a CRICO-funded study that employs motion metrics to provide objective feedback to residents learning central venous catheter placement.
