The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to offer a one-year Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound Fellowship designed to prepare future leaders in point-of-care ultrasound through advanced clinical training, education, research, innovation, and program administration. For physicians interested in pursuing an advanced degree (e.g., MPH or Master's in Medical Education), an optional two-year pathway is available.
The fellowship combines comprehensive training in advanced point-of-care ultrasound with individualized mentorship in education, scholarship, quality improvement, leadership, and academic career development. Fellows gain expertise in advanced echocardiography, critical care ultrasound, musculoskeletal and sports medicine ultrasound, regional anesthesia, procedural guidance, artificial intelligence applications, and ultrasound program administration.
In addition to fellowship activities, fellows work approximately 8–9 attending shifts per month within the Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency, supervising residents and Harvard Medical School students at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. BIDMC is a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School (HMS), and fellows receive an appointment as a Clinical Fellow at Harvard Medical School.
Our fellowship prepares graduates for academic careers as clinician educators, researchers, ultrasound directors, fellowship directors, and leaders in emergency ultrasound programs. The curriculum is individualized to each fellow's academic interests and career goals while providing broad exposure to clinical excellence, education, research, innovation, and leadership.
Our fellowship is accredited through the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council (EUFAC) and was one of the first in the US to obtain accreditation. Board certified or eligible emergency medicine graduates of our fellowship are eligible to apply for the Focused Practice Designation (FPD) in Advanced Emergency Ultrasound through the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM).

Curriculum Highlights
Fellows receive comprehensive training in core and advanced point-of-care ultrasound through dedicated scanning sessions, bedside teaching, image review, and longitudinal faculty mentorship.
Training includes:
- Advanced echocardiography and hemodynamic assessment
- Critical care ultrasound
- Musculoskeletal and sports medicine ultrasound
- Ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia
- Advanced procedural ultrasound
- Weekly quality assurance conferences and image review
- Ultrasound program administration, credentialing, and quality improvement
- Dedicated simulation-based education utilizing advanced ultrasound simulation equipment and an extensive library of normal and pathological ultrasound cases for deliberate practice and competency development

How To Apply
Application Requirements
- Have completed (or be completing) an accredited residency training program appropriate for fellowship eligibility
- Be board-certified or board-eligible in their specialty, as applicable
- Be eligible for medical licensure in Massachusetts
- Demonstrate a strong interest in point-of-care ultrasound, education, research, and academic medicine
- Applications from qualified physicians in other specialties with a strong interest in point-of-care ultrasound are welcome and will be considered on an individual basis.
- International applicants are encouraged to inquire regarding eligibility, visa sponsorship, and available training pathways.
Application Timeline
