Now marking its 20th year, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Fellowship in Disaster Medicine is the first of its kind at a Harvard teaching hospital and a globally recognized training program. The fellowship's more than 140 alumni serve as national and global leaders in disaster medicine, spanning the United States and countries around the world.
This comprehensive one-year fellowship builds practical expertise across the full spectrum of Disaster Medicine, including mass casualty care, EMS disaster operations, humanitarian crisis response, chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) threats, hospital-based emergency management, disaster simulation, and counter-terrorism medicine. Fellows train through a personalized, didactic, and field-based curriculum led by faculty with extensive domestic and international experience.

Curriculum Highlights
Field Rotations
Fellows take part in emergency preparedness training, organizational meetings, and field activities throughout Boston and the New England region, as well as nationally and internationally through the fellowship's extensive network of partners and affiliated faculty.
Didactics and Research
A comprehensive Disaster Medicine curriculum includes a pre-deployment course, original research projects, and focused concentrations in hospital-based emergency management, CBRN, CounterTerrorism Medicine, and EMS disaster operations, complemented by fellow-led tabletop drills and full-scale exercises.
Deployments and Real World
Fellows take on key roles in Boston Marathon preparation and operations and help design and execute large-scale exercises involving more than 20 state agencies. They also participate directly in the operational activities of the fellowship's centers of excellence around the world.
