Chief Resident

As Chief Resident and Director of the Eye Trauma Service for the 2022-2023 academic year, Dr. Neal Patel oversees and coordinates trauma coverage at Mass Eye and Ear, Mass General Hospital, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In addition, he serves as a mentor, teacher, and peer resource to Harvard Ophthalmology’s 24 residents.

Congrats to our 2022 Graduates

Harvard Ophthalmology held its clinical trainee graduation on Thursday, June 16. The outdoor ceremony, held at the Boston Museum of Science, celebrated eight Harvard Ophthalmology residents, the AY2021–2022 Chief Resident, and two optometry residents, as well as 24 clinical fellows from Mass Eye and Ear, Joslin Diabetes Center, and Boston Children’s Hospital.

What’s Next for Our Graduates?

After residency, one graduate serves as Chief Resident and Director of the Eye Trauma Service at Mass Eye and Ear for the following academic year. This junior faculty position provides a strong foundation in academic ophthalmology and extensive surgical experience.

About 85% of graduates go on to pursue subspecialty training in areas such as as vitreoretinal surgery, medical retina, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, cornea and external diseases, inherited retinal disorders, ocular immunology and uveitis, ophthalmic pathology, neuro-ophthalmology, and glaucoma. Others join private practices or accept junior faculty positions at academic medicine institutions.
