4. Childcare costs:
A variety of private childcare options are available in the Boston/Cambridge area before children can attend public schools. Paying for childcare can be a substantial financial burden for postdoctoral fellows and we advise that you plan accordingly to your circumstances and needs. The following information is provided for informational purposes with the hope that it will be helpful. It is accurate to the best of our knowledge, but is not legal advice, and does not imply endorsement by Harvard or Harvard Medical School.
Childcare costs vary depending on many different factors, including service type, infant age and neighborhood. The following are common price ranges for childcare centers in the Boston/Cambridge area:
- Infant-toddler (0-3 y): $2000-$3000/month
- Preschool (3-5 y): $1500-$2500/month
Depending on your affiliation, you may be eligible for benefits that may help with part of the costs. These include flexible spending accounts (https://hr.harvard.edu/flexible-spending-accounts), child care scholarships and assistance paying for backup care (https://hr.harvard.edu/financial-assistance).
