Dr. Mary B Rice

Director of the BIDMC Institute for Lung Health

Dr. Mary Rice is a pulmonary and critical care physician, Director of the BIDMC Institute for Lung Health, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She also serves as the Director of Research for the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at BIDMC.

Her research focuses on how environmental exposures—particularly air pollution and climate change—affect respiratory health in both children and adults. She is pioneering the use of portable monitoring technology and non-invasive upper airway sampling to better understand the impact of indoor air quality on respiratory symptoms and to explore strategies for improving indoor environments for lung health.

Dr. Rice previously chaired the American Thoracic Society’s Environmental Health Policy Committee (2018–2021) and currently co-chairs the Environmental Sustainability Committee at BIDMC.
