Dr. Benson is the Director of Preventive Cardiology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. He is a Principal Investigator in the BIDMC CardioVascular Institute. Dr. Benson graduated from Columbia University, and then completed an M.D./Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Medicine at the University of Michigan. After completing his clinical residency training in Internal Medicine at UM and fellowship training in Cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, he pursued postdoctoral training in functional genomics in the laboratory of Dr. Robert Gerszten at Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Benson joined the BIDMC in 2018 where he leads a research program focused on applying emerging proteomics and metabolomics approaches to identify novel therapeutic targets in preventive cardiology. In addition to his investigative focus, Dr. Benson is an active clinician on the inpatient general cardiology and consultative services, and has started several novel initiatives in the Preventive Cardiology group, including the recent establishment of a Preventive Cardiology genetics program and remote pharmacist-led programs to improve management of modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
