BIDMC Radiology Global Health Programs

Below is an overview of the Department of Radiology's global health initiatives throughout Africa. To learn about similar opportunities across BIDMC, visit the hospital's global health website here.

Through his leadership roles in the American Roentgen Ray Society and the Society of Abdominal Radiology, Dr. Fourie Bezuidenhout of the Division of Abdominal Imaging & Interventions at BIDMC has initiated and led multiple international education initiatives in his continent of origin, Africa.

Initiative #1: "Southern African Abdominal Lecture Series: Radiology Society of South Africa (RSSA)-American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS) Education Initiative"

Overview: This is an education initiative Dr. Bezuidenhout organized as the ARRS African International Liaison. He and his colleagues provided fortnightly live subspecialty lectures (a four-part lecture series) on abdominal imaging topics to residents and private radiologists from seven African countries (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Rwanda, and Malawi) where subspecialty radiology training does not exist.

Initiative #2: “Southern African Chest Lecture Series: RSSA-ARRS Education Initiative"

Overview: This is an education initiative that Dr. Bezuidenhout organized in his role as the ARRS African International Liaison along with RSSA CME officers Paul Rischbieter and Linda Tebogo Hlabangana. This team provided fortnightly live subspecialty lectures (a four-part lecture series) on thoracic imaging topics to radiology residents and private radiologists from eight African countries (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi, and Kenya) where no subspecialty abdominal imaging training exists.

Initiative #3: "Southern African Pancreatitis Lecture Series: SAR-RSSA International Education Outreach"

Overview: This is a lecture series that Dr. Bezuidenhout organized in his role as SAR Pancreatitis DFP Chair, along with the RSSA CME officers Paul Rischbieter and Linda Tebogo Hlabangana. The team provided monthly live subspecialty lectures (a three-part lecture series) on Pancreatitis-related topics to radiology residents and private radiologists from eight African countries (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Rwanda, Malawi, and Kenya), as these countries all currently lack subspecialty training in abdominal radiology.

Dr. Vijay Ramalingam of the Division of Interventional Radiology at BIDMC is an ongoing partner to the Road2IR organization which, in collaboration with Health4TheWorld, aims to build self-sustaining IR training programs in East Africa. Dr. Ramalingam's work has focused on establishing such programs in Tanzania and is now expanding to teaching and developing teachers in Rwanda and Uganda.
