Fleming Mathew
Fleming Mathew earned his MBBS from the School of Medical Sciences and Research, Sharda University, India. In med school, his passion for teaching led him to work as a junior faculty of Biology at Pie Education, where he taught botany and zoology to 100+ high school students and prepared them for the national medical entrance examination. Fleming later completed his internship at Sharda Hospital during which he volunteered to serve as the rural health liaison, leading a team of five social workers, delivering essential healthcare services, coordinating referrals and transportation to the socially disadvantaged across more than 100 villages in the state of Uttar Pradesh. He later worked as a Resident Medical Officer at his alma mater and concurrently served as a Teaching Assistant at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Center for Executive and Continuing Professional Education, mentoring three international students in research methodologies.
Fleming was accepted into Dr. Gangadharan's lab as a postdoc trainee via the International Research Initiative Fellowship Program'23. He is also an IMPACT Fellow'23 at MIT where he learned about grant writing and stakeholder engagement. As an International Medical Graduate with the prospects of pursuing a residency in general surgery, Fleming has been actively mentoring IMGs around the world helping them apply to research fellowships, navigating the USMLE, and currently serves as the Mentorship Lead in the Gender Equity Initiative in Global Surgery (GEIGS) providing a safe and accessible space for 1:1 mentorship for medical students across the globe.
Currently, working as the Chief Postdoctoral Research Fellow under the aegis of Dr. Gangadharan in the Division of Thoracic Surgery, Fleming leads projects on drug repurposing and validating novel diagnostic tools to screen patients with Excessive Central Airway Collapse popularly known as tracheobronchomalacia. He also provides research-related support to general surgery residents who collaborate with the lab.
Outside his professional endeavours, Fleming is a bird-person and has been an advocate for poultry bird rehabilitation, providing safe havens for birds rescued from slaughterhouses. In his free time, Fleming enjoys playing chess, watching cinema, practicing calligraphy, and delving into the works of Kafka, Nietzsche, and Dostoevsky.
