About William Winkelman

Committed to care, teaching and discovery

I am a board-certified urogynecologist and Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harvard Medical School, specializing in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. My clinical practice focuses on comprehensive care for pelvic floor disorders, including urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladder, and voiding dysfunction. I am committed to providing thoughtful, evidence-based care, with an emphasis on shared decision-making and individualized treatment plans that reflect each patient’s goals and priorities.

I completed my undergraduate education at Dartmouth College, where I majored in Religion with a focus on bioethics. During college, I was a recipient of the Tucker Fellowship, an award recognizing service, spirituality, and social justice, and I was supported by the Neil Samuel Ghiso Foundation for early scholarship examining quality of life and ethical considerations in serious illness. These formative experiences shaped my enduring interest in how values, ethics, and lived experience intersect with medical decision-making—an approach that continues to inform my clinical and academic work.

I earned my medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California, San Francisco, where I served as Administrative Chief Resident. I then pursued fellowship training in Urogynecology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Mount Auburn Hospital. This training solidified my interest in minimally invasive and vaginal approaches to pelvic floor surgery, as well as a durable commitment to outcomes-driven, patient-centered care.

In addition to my clinical work, I serve as Fellowship Program Director for Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. I am deeply invested in surgical education, mentorship, and curriculum development, and I completed a Faculty Fellowship in Medical Education to further formalize my training in teaching and educational leadership. My academic interests include outcomes research, innovation in pelvic floor therapies, and the intersection of education, technology, and patient experience. I am actively involved in clinical research and quality improvement initiatives and regularly contribute to peer-reviewed publications, national and international meetings, and professional societies.

Clinically, I have particular interest in minimally invasive and vaginal surgery, office-based procedures, and nonsurgical therapies, with a focus on improving patient comfort, safety, and long-term outcomes. I also enjoy caring for patients with recurrent or refractory conditions and collaborating across specialties to manage complex pelvic floor disorders.
