Tom Simopoulos, MD, MA
Dr. Thomas T. Simopoulos, MD, MA, is the former Director of the Arnold Warfield Pain Management Center and is currently an anesthesiologist in the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at BIDMC. He received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and a Master of Arts in Biochemistry from Brandeis University. After completing his residency in anesthesiology at Brigham and Womens Hospital and a pain fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, he joined the department in 2000. He is also an Associate Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School.
During his career at BIDMC, Dr. Simopoulos has pursued research in the areas of interventional pain management. In specific, his focus has been on the outcomes of patients receiving percutaneous disc decompression and radiofrequency lesioning. In addition, most of his current work is on improving the outcomes of patients undergoing spinal cord stimulation for pain by studying complications and developing strategies for potential mitigation. He has contributed to multiple papers emphasizing fluoroscopic techniques for safe and accurate epidural space identification.
