Dr. Sarah J. Karinja is an Instructor at Harvard Medical School and an attending plastic surgeon at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), with clinical and research expertise in microsurgery, complex reconstruction, and breast reconstruction. She completed an integrated Plastic Surgery residency at Mass General Brigham, followed by a Microsurgery Fellowship at BIDMC, where she gained advanced experience in free flap reconstruction and complex wound care.

Her research focuses on translational and clinical studies aimed at improving reconstructive outcomes, including investigations into wound healing, tissue viability, and biomaterial–tissue interactions. Dr. Karinja has led and contributed to multiple studies evaluating surgical site infections, timing of reconstruction after radiation, DIEP flap safety in high-risk patients, and strategies to reduce complications in breast reconstruction.
