Trunk Neuromuscular Control

Trunk neuromuscular control – the ability to accurately and precisely move the spine – may be an important factor underlying balance and physical function. While this control is impaired in patients with back pain, it has not been studied in relation to balance or physical function in older people. We have created a unique system that uses sensors (Xsens IMUs) placed on the spine to provide real-time feedback on trunk movement. By providing a moving target for tracking, we can then assess the accuracy and precision with which someone can move their spine. We have performed a small pilot study to test this system, and aim to examine how trunk control relates to aging, balance, and physical function going forward.
