Our Research

The Division conducts innovative research in several unique areas including:

  • Aging, including work in delirium, medical decision-making in older adults, and optimizing medication prescribing for hospitalized patients.
  • Cardiovascular Health, including the roles of lifestyle factors, like diet and alcohol use, pharmaceuticals, biomarkers, and genetics in primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention.
  • Health Disparities, including research focused on racial and ethnic minorities, immigrant populations, persons who are obese or disabled, and the socio-economically disadvantaged.
  • Hospital Medicine, aimed at improving the inpatient hospital care continuum, from admission to discharge and beyond, in order to better patient outcomes.
  • Placebo Studies, including work to understand how the humanistic elements of medicine, like patient-provider relationships and the power of expectation, can contribute to the improvement of care.
  • Medical Transparency, through the OpenNotes program, including studies to understand the effects of medical transparency on medication use, patient safety, and patient-provider communication.
