At the 2024 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting (June 29-July 2), we had seven brilliant trainees present their work on health care affordability, private equity, and outcomes for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.
Oral Presentations:
Victoria Bartlett, MD presented her work "Private Equity Acquisitions of Outpatient Cardiology Practices Increased Sharply in Southern Communities with Low Poverty Levels from 2013 to 2023." This was simultaneously published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Michael Liu, MPhil presented his work on health equity adjustment and hospital performance in the Medicare value-based purchasing program.
Andrew Oseran, MD, MBA, MSc presented his work "The Prevalence, Treatment, and Control of Common Medical Conditions Are Similar Among Medicare Advantage and Traditional Medicare Beneficiaries: A National Analysis" in a late-breaking oral presentation.
Poster Presentations:
Stephen Mein, MD presented his work on changes in healthcare and prescription medication affordability during the pandemic in the United States. This was simultaneously published in JAMA Health Forum.
Frederikke Held Berg, MD presented her findings that cardiovascular disease burden is substantially higher in the United States versus Denmark due to socioeconomic disparities.
Sukruth Shashikumar, MD presented his work "Changes in the Financial Burden of Health Care Among the Privately Insured US Population, 2007-2009." This was simultaneously published in JAMA Internal Medicine.
Victoria Bartlett, MD presented her findings that the Inflation Reduction Act's out-of-pocket spending car for prescription drugs will save 1.2 million Medicare beneficiaries $2.1 billion.
Lucas Marinacci, MD presented his work "Medicaid Unwinding is Disproportionately Impacting Hispanic Adults." This work was simultaneously published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
Sudheesha Perera, MD presented his work on changes in public views of health care coverage, spending, and leadership in the United States.
Dr. Wadhera, MD, MPP, MPhil was the session chair of "Healthcare Financing, Payment, and Privatization" and presented his work "Have Hospitalizations and Outpatient Visits Returned to Pre-Pandemic Levels Among Medicare Beneficiaries with Cardiovascular Disease."
