About Dr. Yuri Quintana

Yuri Quintana, Ph.D., FACMI, FIAHSI is Chief of the Division of Clinical Informatics, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is an internationally recognized leader in digital health, AI in healthcare, and global health informatics, with over two decades of experience designing technologies that empower patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

Dr. Quintana’s research focuses on learning health systems, AI-driven collaboration platforms, and digital tools for patient engagement and care coordination. He leads the development of Alicanto, a global cloud platform for professional learning, collaboration, and virtual consultations, and InfoSAGE, a family-centered system for home-based care coordination and medication management. His projects have advanced digital mental health evaluation, serious games for health, and AI-enabled clinical decision support.

He also leads the DCI Network, a consortium of private sector and non-profit organizations, healthcare providers, leading academics, patients, and thought leaders committed to developing scalable AI-powered solutions for healthcare. The Network’s initiatives focus on AI governance, patient-centered design, and building interoperable systems that accelerate clinical innovation while ensuring safety, equity, and trust.

Previously, at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, he created Cure4Kids and POND4Kids, used by tens of thousands of clinicians in over 180 countries to improve pediatric cancer outcomes. Earlier, he contributed to Canada’s HealNet Research Network, applying evidence-based methods to improve consumer health behavior.

Trained as an engineer at the University of Waterloo, Dr. Quintana combines deep technical expertise with visionary leadership in AI for healthcare, telehealth, mobile health, and real-world data integration. His work continues to shape global standards in precision medicine, digital health equity, and learning health networks.

Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

The DCI Network has led a coordinated research initiative focused on frameworks for evaluating and governing AI in healthcare. Central to this work are two high-impact conferences: Signal Through The Noise: What Works, What Lasts, and What Matters in Healthcare AI and Blueprints for Trust: Best Practices and Regulatory Pathways for Ethical AI in Healthcare. These convenings catalyzed collaboration among over 200 experts from academia, industry, policy, and patient advocacy. The goal: to develop practical, consensus-driven approaches to ensure AI systems are safe, effective, equitable, and trustworthy (SEET).

Five resulting publications outline actionable strategies in specific domains:

  • Responsible AI Governance: (in IJMI) Introduces a multi-level governance framework balancing speed, scope, and capability, with voluntary certification and participatory oversight mechanisms.

  • Clinical Decision Support: (in JAMIA) Recommends lifecycle oversight, validation standards, and safety monitoring for AI-enabled CDS tools.

  • Consumer Health: (in IJMI) Advocates for the Health AI Consumer Consortium (HAIC2), transparent "nutrition labels" for AI tools, and end-user feedback loops.

  • Real-World Data and Evidence (in JAMIA): Emphasizes bias mitigation, documentation standards, and accountability for data used in AI development.

  • Equity Integration in AI Lifecycle: Proposes a 7-phase framework to embed racial justice and equity into AI development, addressing risks of algorithmic bias and exclusion.

Together, these initiatives provide a roadmap for implementing responsible, equitable AI in medicine. They underscore the importance of structured governance models, patient-centered design, and proactive accountability mechanisms across real-world settings. The upcoming 2025 DCI Network AI Conference will build on these efforts to guide the next phase of healthcare AI.

Medication Safety and Patient Centered Care

This domain prioritizes improving medication information accessibility and patient communication strategies. Research efforts are dedicated to developing recommendations for effective presentation of medication data to enhance patient understanding and safety. Stakeholder engagement is a key component of this work.

Data Platforms for Learning Health Systems

Research in this domain aims to design online platforms that foster collaborative learning for implementing evidence-based practices. These platforms support multi-institutional efforts, enabling efficient knowledge sharing and clinical decision-making. This area encompasses platforms designed to collect and analyze health outcomes on a global scale. The research emphasizes creating databases that facilitate data sharing and outcomes analysis, particularly in low-resource settings. These efforts aim to improve clinical care through standardized data collection and collaboration.

Digital Mental Health Evaluation

This area is centered on creating frameworks and guidelines for assessing the efficacy of digital mental health applications. The research aims to ensure that these apps are safe, effective, and trustworthy, contributing to the broader conversation about digital health services policy.
