Chief Resident Welcome

Welcome to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Anesthesiology Residency website and thank you for your interest in our program!

As a premier Harvard Medical School teaching hospital, BIDMC carries a strong tradition of world-class patient care. This culture of excellence shines through the comprehensive surgical and anesthesia care that our patients receive. Each day, our residents manage a complex variety of clinical cases including cardiac, thoracic, transplant, vascular, and neurosurgical cases, to name a few. We are also a Level 1 trauma center and home to the New England Center for Placental Disorders. Our busy labor and delivery unit manages 5,200 births per year and has been designated a Center of Excellence by the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology. Our acute pain and regional anesthesia service is also very active, performing over 3,500 blocks each year. We’re very proud of our residency program and trainees, and hope you are able to get a sense of the depth and breadth of our program provides.

We are privileged to closely work with our department chair, Dr. Daniel Talmor, and the residency program leadership. They are world class leaders in their fields, strong resident advocates, and share a unified vision on innovation and continuing to produce future anesthesiologist leaders.

Our department places a huge emphasis on education, favoring a multimodal, competency-based approach to our curriculum, including didactics, simulation sessions in our state-of-the-art Shapiro Simulation and Skills Center, skills sessions in our Anesthesia Skills Lab, board review and mock oral board sessions, longitudinal Journal Club, Ultrasound, QI curricula, and so much more. Under Dr. Robina Matyal’s leadership in the Center for Education Technology, Research and Innovation (CERTAIN), our educators continue to strive for excellence through research to improve resident education. In addition to traditional education, we firmly believe in empowering our residents to begin their journeys as physician leaders at the beginning of their training, by connecting them with resources/ opportunities to get involved in research, committees, and various other longitudinal leadership positions pertaining to various fields including healthcare administration, medical legislation, finance, education and more.

We pride ourselves on our dedication to resident wellness. Our departmental wellness program sponsors various social events throughout the year, from social excursions to on-call snacks for residents. In addition, our Residency Wellness Committee is actively involved in planning fun activities such as beach days, hikes, apple picking trips, and holiday parties. Our mentorship program is also unique with each incoming resident being carefully paired with 2 faculty advisors and resident peers spanning all classes. These “families” function as both a social house (yes, like Harry Potter) as well as a safe space for residents to share their experiences and seek out life advice, during and after residency.

Boston is a fun, diverse, and dynamic place to live, whether you’re a New England native or first-timer in the city! There are many renowned breweries and restaurants, a rich theater and music scene, and abundant museums for all ages. In addition to its urban amenities, Boston provides great access to the outdoors: from nature walks along Jamaica Pond and hiking trails in the Blue Hills Reservation, to beaches and bike paths along the Cape Cod National Seashore, to skiing in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. You’ll never run out of fun things to do!

Our residents are a cohesive community that enjoys spending time together at work and in our free time. From birthday and holiday celebrations, to baby showers, to weekend get-togethers, the pictures on our website will hopefully provide a glimpse of our lives together outside of work.

We hope you love our program as much as we do, and we wish you the best of luck on Match Day!

Welcome from Dr. Sara Neves, Residency Program Director
