Residency Program
Welcome to Our Anesthesia Residency Program
Our mission is to train exceptional anesthesiologists with the knowledge, technical expertise, clinical judgment, professionalism, and leadership skills, to provide outstanding patient care and advance the specialty through intellectual curiosity, scholarship, and lifelong learning.
As a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital, BIDMC combines the breadth and complexity of a leading academic medical center within a collaborative and supportive learning environment. Through progressive responsibility, outstanding mentorship, and a comprehensive educational curriculum, we prepare residents to become confident, independent anesthesiologists and future leaders in our specialty.
Our curriculum extends well beyond the operating room, integrating simulation, point-of-care ultrasound, perioperative echocardiography, critical care, and evidence-based perioperative medicine with opportunities in research, quality improvement, medical education, and leadership. At the same time, we recognize that every resident has unique interests and career aspirations, and we are committed to providing the guidance, flexibility, and opportunities needed to help each resident to achieve their goals.
Above all, we are committed to fostering a culture of excellence, professionalism, collaboration, and respect. We believe exceptional residency training is built on outstanding patient care, meaningful mentorship, and a shared commitment to continuous improvement.
We invite you to explore our program and learn more about what makes training at BIDMC a unique and rewarding experience.

Board Certification and Passage
Board Certification and Passage
Over the last 10 years:
- Our board certification rate stands strong at 100% of eligible candidates.
- Our first attempt ABA written and oral board exam passage averages 95% and 97% respectively.
- Our residents uniformly excel on other exams as well, boasting a 100% passage rate for those who have selected to take the NBE Basic PTEeXAM and achieve basic TEE certification.
This exemplary track record is a testament to the diligence of our residents, the quality of our didactic programs and the commitment of our staff to mentorship and tutoring programs. One BIDMC Anesthesia Residency Graduate said, "I felt well prepared for both [the ABA written and oral certification exams and the NBE Basic PTEeXAM], which is a recurrent theme as I reflect upon my residency training. I don't think we all realized just how unique and extensive our opportunities and support were as residents."
