Loring Scholar Clinical Scientist Research Track
Integrating Research and Clinical Training
Applicants to our anesthesia residency program have the option to apply for our Loring Scholar/Clinical Scientist Research Track. This four-year track, which will integrate research with clinical training, starts as a one-year categorical internship, continues as a three-year residency with an added focus on research.
Mission
The mission of the Loring Scholar/Clinical Scientist Research Track within the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine is to train future clinical scientists and leaders in research. We aim to:
- Provide a solid foundation in research methodology
- Develop a productive research career during training
- Produce clinical scientists of the highest caliber
Loring Scholar/Clinical Scientist Research Track
The Loring Scholar/Clinical Scientist Research Track is an individualized program created by the residency program and the Center for Anesthesia Research Excellence (CARE) and features the following:
- Identification of research focus, appropriate mentorship from within, as well as Harvard Catalyst and MIT resources
- Intensive mentoring
- Research time
- Salary stipend: $15,000/year starting in the PGY-1 year
- Benefits:
- Two-week introduction to research course as a PGY-1 or PGY-2
- Statistics and grant writing Catalyst courses
- Online Catalyst coursework
- Program in Clinical Effectiveness (PCE) course at the School of Public Health
- If coming into T32 track following residency, option to negotiate for further School of Public Health coursework that is relevant to the area of study
Criteria
The Clinical Scientist must:
- Remain in good academic standing in all years of the track
- Maintain satisfactory clinical performance on ABA reports
- Meet or exceed all clinical milestones
- Perform at >40th percentile on ITE exams and pass the Basic Exam
- Take full call complement during research time
- Have one clinical day per week during research blocks to maintain skill set
- Set outcomes with mentor supervision, including metrics (e.g. abstracts at targeted meetings)
