Tri-Institute Fellowship in Climate Change and Human Health 

Founded 2019

The Climate Change and Human Health Fellowship trains physicians to become leaders in climate and human health research, education, communication, and advocacy. The fellowship program is offered through a collaboration between Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard C-CHANGE, and the Harvard FXB Center for Health and Human Rights. Fellows participate in core fellowship didactics, develop an area of individual focus, engage in original academic research, and receive mentorship from leaders in the field. Activities occur across Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, with additional opportunities throughout the Harvard system.

Human Health and Global Environmental Change

This graduate course is an overview of a wide spectrum of climate change and environmental health topics, ranging from climate
science to hazards resulting from global environmental change to healthcare-based and policy-based solutions.  Health and healthcare dimensions of the climate crisis are emphasised, as are tools available to study, prevent, and mitigate the influences of the climate crisis on human health, and how to overcome challenges inherent in this work and progress towards realizing impactful solutions. This course is intended to serve as a primer that will equip students from a variety of backgrounds to navigate this multidisciplinary issue.

Heat Emergencies: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Management

Harvard Medical School Continuing Education
June 16-25, 2025

The Heat Emergencies: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Management CME Course is a virtual, lecture-based 4 half-day course to educate clinicians on how to diagnose, treat, and prevent heat-related illness. The course will describe the current evidence around all heat-related emergencies, including heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat syncope. The course will provide a background on the changing epidemiology of heat-related illness, varying definitions of heat, basics of thermal physiology, and individual and population-based approaches to prevention of heat-related illness.

Climate Change, Planetary Health, and Medicine

Harvard Medical School Continuing Education
May 2-3, 2024

Climate change is a threat to the patients we care for in health care. This course is an opportunity for practicing health professionals to learn about the mechanisms by which climate change impacts human health and how it influences diagnosis, counseling and treatment plans. It additionally describes the impacts of climate changes on the health care delivery system itself and how health care professionals can make change to address this public health threat. The course is organized to touch upon climate impacts on a diversity of health conditions and disease processes and is valuable to health care providers of all fields.

Climate and Health Ambassadors Workshop

Ministry of Health and Wellness, Government of The Bahamas; EarthMedic EarthNurse; Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education
December 2022

This workshop was developed and implemented in collaboration with the Climate Change and Health team from the Ministry of Health and Wellness of the Government of the Bahamas. A total of approximately 90 healthcare workers and members of civil society participated in the two-day program. Educational impact was assessed via pre- and post-event surveys; results were published in June 2023.
