Clinical Program Director : Eric A. Secemsky, MD, Msc (Interventional Cardiology/Vascular Intervention)
Programmatic Leadership Team : Anna Krawisz, MD (Hypertension Specialist/Vascular Cardiology); Brett Carroll, MD (Vascular Cardiology); Jennifer Cluett, MD (Hypertension Specialist/Primary Care)
Program Overview:
This one-year advanced fellowship provides immersive training in the full spectrum of hypertension care and vascular medicine. The fellowship is hosted at the BIDMC Complex Hypertension Clinic, which has nationally recognized excellence in diagnosis, innovation, and management of complex hypertension disorders.
Led by Dr. Anna Krawisz and Dr. Jennifer Cluett, the Complex Hypertension Clinic serves the entire Beth Israel Lahey System of hospital centers and the broader New England community in assisting in the evaluation of secondary causes of hypertension, optimizing pharmacotherapy, and evaluating and referring for renal denervation (RDN). The Clinic works closely with Dr. Secemsky and the BIDMC Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory to facilitate timely performance of RDN and close follow-up. The clinical program integrates seamlessly with BIDMC's Smith Center for Outcomes Research, an internationally recognized outcomes research center with a specific focus on the epidemiology and treatment of resistant hypertension. The Smith Center houses the only independent multicenter RDN Registry, providing rich educational and academic opportunities for the candidate fellow.
The Fellowship includes robust exposure to the management of vascular disorders and related conditions, including the inpatient management of hypertensive crises, post-surgical blood pressure management of aortic aneurysm and dissection, and evaluation of new hypertensive-related disorders including visceral artery dissections and renal artery stenosis. Fellows gain clinical expertise, exposure to procedural training in RDN, scholarly development, and board preparation for Hypertension Specialist certification.
Program Values:
This fellowship fosters technical mastery and physician-leadership grounded in dignity, collaboration, and health equity. Graduates are prepared to lead hypertension programs, conduct impactful research, and guide future policy.
