Professional Biography
Dr. Mukamal's primary research interests are investigating the role of dietary and lifestyle factors – with an additional focus on alcohol consumption – on the incidence and prognosis of neurocognitive and cardiovascular disorders and their physiological intermediates. As a general internist and clinical investigator, his research has incorporated large-scale epidemiological studies, hospital-based clinical data, and focused interventional studies. The outcomes of this research have also been broad-based and include novel cardiovascular risk factors and subclinical vascular disease, falls and suicide, and biochemical, genetic, and other physiological determinants of dementia and diabetes. Some of his recent projects include characterization of the role of non-esterified fatty acid species in cardiometabolic and neurocognitive diseases in older adults and a short-term feeding study of whole blueberries among older community-living adults.
