About
Mission
Cardiovascular Imaging Research Group at the Smith Center
Our mission is to leverage cardiac imaging data and apply rigorous scientific evaluation to enhance the understanding and advancement of cardiovascular disease diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes globally. We believe that cardiac imaging data harbors a wealth of information that can be harnessed to tackle a multitude of cardiac health issues, ranging from care accessibility and health disparities to the creation of deep learning neural networks and machine learning models to augment patient diagnoses in the clinic.
Proud to be part of the
Smith Center for Outcomes Research in Cardiology
at BIDMC
Led by Dr. Jordan Strom, our team is comprised of faculty members, research fellows, research students, biostatisticians, and staff. We work closely with the Echocardiography Laboratory at BIDMC and collaborate with other academic institutions and global industry partners to harness the power of cardiac imaging techniques to improve health outcomes worldwide.
As part of the Smith Center of Outcomes Research in Cardiology, we collaborate with national leaders in the fields of outcomes research, epidemiology, and biostatistics.
Our Research Approach
We leverage a range of techniques and partnerships to impact cardiac health care. We use robust biostatistical and epidemiological techniques for our research, develop and validate cutting edge healthcare technology, advocate for policy change, and mentor the future generations of researchers.
Methodology
Rigorous methodology is integral to scientific success. As trained epidemiologists, we understand the importance of effective study design and robust biostatistical methods. Within the Smith Center, we work with world-leading epidemiologists and biostatisticians, paving the way in how we think about outcomes research and its place in understanding disease causality versus correlation.
Healthcare Technology
As physicians, we understand that technology is fundamental to cardiac imaging in the clinic. We use advanced imaging modalities to visualize and assess cardiac structure and function. As researchers, we develop novel technologies and software to enhance our ability to diagnose and understand cardiac diseases and their progression. We work with global leaders in imaging technology to improve accuracy, efficiency, and patient outcomes within the field.
Policy
We recognize the crucial role that policy plays in driving changes in public health and healthcare. Collaborating closely with the Health Policy and Equity division at the Smith Center, we engage with advocacy groups and policymakers to ensure our research extends beyond the laboratory, to improve healthcare experiences and outcomes for individuals.
Mentorship
Our trainees are core to our research success. By being a part of the Smith Center, we are able to share resources and expertise to ensure our mentees are able to develop valuable skills in all aspects of cardiology outcomes research. Dr. Strom provides regular one-to-one mentorship, steering trainees through the research journey and preparing them with the necessary skills and knowledge for future projects and research careers.
