Project Viva
Project Viva is a groundbreaking longitudinal research study of women and children that began in 1999. The initial goal of Project Viva was to find ways to improve the health of mothers and their children by looking at the effects of a mother's diet as well as other factors during pregnancy and after birth. Over the past two decades, Project Viva has expanded its focus to include a wider range of experiences that influence health, extending into midlife for mothers and young adulthood for their children. As a Co-Investigator of Project Viva, I am leading a grant from the American Heart Association (AHA) that investigates the impacts of exposure to a mixture of toxic metals and essential elements during pregnancy and postpartum on women’s mid-life cardiometabolic health. We are also interested in examining how adherence to a healthy lifestyle, including eating a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, avoiding smoking, and getting enough sleep, may mitigate the health impacts of toxic metals.
