2025–2026 Residents and Fellows
Berk Aktas
Born and raised in Turkey, Berk developed a strong interest in surgery during medical school, which led him to briefly start a residency in ENT. However, he soon realized his true calling was in understanding disease at a deeper level and chose to channel his surgical passion into surgical pathology. He completed two years of pathology residency at Koc University School of Medicine in Istanbul and previously completed an observership at BIDMC, where he also contributed to ongoing research. He has already been remarkably academically productive in our field, with a focus on pancreatobiliary, molecular and bone & soft tissue pathology. His various research has been presented at both the European Congress of Pathology (ECP) and USCAP.
Outside of work, Berk is passionate about medical education and reaches thousands of students through social media. He loves history—especially Roman and Early Modern European—and enjoys giving informal tours of historic Istanbul. He enjoys spending time with his family—his wife Ezgi and her two Greek goddess cats, Hera and Venus. He’s an adventurous traveler and devoted foodie: his favorite cuisine is Chinese, with Turkish coming in second, even though he’s Turkish (don’t tell his grandma). His motto in life is “Hicbir seye ihtiyacimiz yok, yalniz bir seye ihtiyacimiz vardir; caliskan olmak,” which means “We need nothing, but only one thing; to be hardworking.
Eromon Asikhia
Eromon joins us from American University of Antigua College of Medicine, where he spread the love of pathology to others through his work with the Pathology Interest Group. He is a soccer afficionado, and uses that as an outlet for both personal wellbeing and, through an organization called Grassroots Soccer, to unite the community around reducing the stigma of HIV/AIDS. Welcome, Eromon!
John Emery
John is a recent graduate of the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He initially went to medical school wanting to be an infectious disease doctor but unexpectedly found his way to pathology while on his required OB/GYN clerkship. Since then, it has been all pathology all the time, especially since he discovered that pathologists run microbiology labs! While his first love remains bugs, viruses, parasites, and fungi, John has also found a love of anatomic pathology and is interested in cytopathology, renal pathology, as well as medical autopsy.
John is also a passionate educator, stemming from his previous career as an officer in the US Navy. In medical school, John continued to teach during his fourth year in both the clinical and the small-group didactic environment. He is very excited to continue teaching and mentoring medical students as they rotate through the lab!
Outside of work, you might be able to catch John in local community theater productions, although probably not during his intern year. John can also regularly be found re-creating a British revolutionary war regiment at events throughout New England and Eastern New York where he and his friends attempt to bring to life the events of the Saratoga campaign of 1777.
Robert Hennis
Robert graduated magna cum laude from Brown University and earned his MD at Texas Tech with a Distinction in Research and Scholarship. He is no stranger to Boston, having obtained NIH funding through the Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) program to undertake research at Harvard Medical School, and he continues to be passionate about research in the biology of aging. Robert loves playing piano and guitar in his free time, and he founded the Musicians Association at his medical school to share his passion for music through free lessons and volunteer performances in healthcare settings. He also loves spending time with friends and family and being by the ocean. Before medical school, Robert ran a successful medical education consulting company.
Gayathri Kini
Gayathri completed her medical studies at Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore, India, where she earned awards for outstanding academic performance. In line with her interest in pathology, she worked on various projects, such as identifying significant factors for prostate biopsy fragmentation and studying histopathologic features of MMR-deficient colorectal cancer. She presented papers at several national and international conferences, including the European Congress of Pathology (ECP) and CAP- Annual meeting. Gayathri has been actively involved in teaching, medical education and Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form she was formally trained in for more than 10 years. In her free time, she enjoys cozying up with her favorite book or exploring outdoors with her family.
Arthur Reyes
Born in the Philippines from humble beginnings, Arthur moved to New Jersey equipped with his innate curiosity and passion for learning. He has a long interest in basic neuroscience research including work at Johns Hopkins University on mice models in Multiple Sclerosis. Arthur then pursued a combined DO/PhD at Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, where he did his Neuroscience PhD dissertation on the role of chronic stress-induced neuroinflammation in the Locus Coeruleus.
Arthur, through his academic background and research interest, found Pathology - in particular Neuropathology as a fascinating and fulfilling specialty. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling with his partner, Tommy. His love for different cuisines is evident, as he can be seen regularly checking the best restaurant list on travel guides to make reservations. However, what truly brings out his creative and artistic side is his love for photography. He is an avid amateur photographer who loves capturing landscapes and the occasional candid shots.
Robert Theodore "Teddy" Steinbock, Jr
Teddy hails from Louisville, KY, but has deep ties to New England. His mom’s side of the family is from Mansfield, MA, where he spent many holidays. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 2014 with degrees in cell biology and chemistry. While there, he met his future husband, Patrick, who is from New Hampshire. The two lived in Boston for almost three years after college, where Teddy studied the entry mechanisms of HIV at the DFCI.
As a product of early-days IVF, Teddy likes to think he was made in and for the lab. His early research experiences prompted him to pursue and complete his MD-PhD in Virology at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.
Teddy is excited to return to the Boston area for residency, surrounded by his and Patrick’s growing families. When not at the microscope, you can find Teddy backpacking in the woods, skiing the slopes, or maybe shaking it in da clurb.
Larissa Ybanez
After graduating with degrees in anthropology and biochemistry from the University of Texas at Austin, Larissa went on to earn her combined DO/MPH degree from the University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine in San Antonio. She is passionate about child injury and abuse prevention, an enthusiasm that stems from her long-standing interest in forensic pathology and her experiences as a forensic autopsy technician. Larissa has also built on this passion through her scholarly work and by serving as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children with active CPS cases in San Antonio. In her free time, Larissa enjoys running a small crafting business, playing board games, and spending time with her pet snakes, Pancit and Scoop.

As an undergraduate at Florida State University, he took part in cutting-edge nanotechnology research, developing microarrays and lipid-based sensors. During medical school at the University of Miami, he explored both basic and clinical research, publishing on topics ranging from the effects of anti-arrhythmic drugs in Zebrafish models to the clinical significance of calcification in Peyronie’s disease.
His clinical experiences have been just as diverse. He has worked as a medical scribe, completed a surgical internship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and spent a dedicated research year at the National Center for Advanced Technologies for Image Guided Therapy. During that time, he focused on implantable microdevices for personalized prostate cancer treatment and conducted comparative research on prostate biopsy techniques. Now, as a pathology resident, he has a vested interest in digital pathology and in exploring how emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, may shape the future of diagnostic medicine. Outside of medicine, Quinn enjoys video games and weightlifting as ways to relax and recharge.
