Featured Research Areas

At the Vega Laboratory for Translational Surgical Neuro-Oncology (VL-TSNO), our mission is to integrate surgical innovation, molecular discovery, and clinical translation to advance the care of patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors. We work at the intersection of operative technique development, proteomic and microRNA-driven therapeutics, and functional outcomes research—bridging bench to bedside to improve survival, preserve neurologic function, and enhance quality of life.

Surgical Neuro-Oncology Outcomes and Innovation

Cranial stair-step incision for minimizing postoperative complications in neuro-oncologic surgery

Our team investigates the full spectrum of surgical outcomes in brain tumor care—examining operative safety, functional preservation, reconstructive durability, and patient-centered endpoints. We are dedicated to refining and validating next-generation operative approaches, including the “cranial stair-step” technique for supratentorial and skull-base access, with the goal of providing maximal tumor resection while minimizing morbidity.

Translational Proteomics in Glioblastoma

GBM

Engineered antibody fragment shuttles targeting BBB endothelial proteins to enable efficient therapeutic delivery to the brain in GBM models

Leveraging high-resolution proteomic profiling, we explore the biologic heterogeneity of glioblastoma, identify mechanisms of therapeutic resistance, and define actionable biomarkers to guide precision neuro-oncologic therapies. Our research links molecular signatures with clinical and surgical variables to enable rational trial design and improved patient stratification.

Molecular Therapeutics in Meningioma

Differential miRNA expression heatmap by meningioma grade showing miR-483-5p and IGF-2 upregulation

Differential miRNA expression heatmap by meningioma grade showing miR-483-5p and IGF-2 upregulation

Focusing on benign, recurrent or aggressive meningiomas, our work interrogates microRNA networks, transcriptomic regulators, and chemotherapeutic sensitivities. We translate these insights into pre-clinical therapeutic models and collaborate toward novel adjuvant strategies, aiming to expand treatment options beyond current standards for benign and intermediate grade meningiomas.
