Medical Education

About Our Fellowship

The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to offer a one-year mentored fellowship in medical education. For those interested in obtaining an advanced degree (MEd, MPH), a two-year option is available. The fellowship focuses on learning theory, curriculum design, education-based research, simulation, assessment, feedback, and faculty development with the goal of producing the next generation of medical education leaders in emergency medicine. In addition to the fellowship requirements, the fellow will work 8-9 clinical shifts per month as an attending physician at BIDMC and its affiliated community hospitals during which they will directly supervise medical students and residents. BIDMC is an affiliate institution and primary teaching site for Harvard Medical School (HMS). Fellows will have an appointment of clinical fellow at HMS.

The emergency medicine medical education fellowship will prepare the fellow for an academic leadership role in medical education and provide them with the skill set to adapt to the continuously evolving educational landscape. Our fellowship graduates have secured leadership roles in undergraduate and graduate medical education at institutions across the country. The fellowship is approved by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). There are four primary focus areas of the fellowship:

Education

The fellow will receive dedicated teaching through the monthly fellowship didactic series. Didactic topics include principles of adult learning theory, teaching techniques, curriculum development, simulation, assessment, feedback, remediation, medical education research, scholarship, generational learning differences, among others. During the fellowship year, the fellow will be expected to participate in an external medical education course such as the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Teaching Fellowship or the Harvard Macy Institute course and attend the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors (CORD) Academic Assembly. The fellow will also be expected to join the BIDMC Academy of Medical Educators and attend sponsored lectures. Fellows will also get direct teaching and hands-on experience in simulation.

Teaching

The fellow will be involved in teaching both undergraduate and graduate trainees. They will be heavily involved in undergraduate and graduate medical education via simulation, clinical bedside teaching, and didactics. They will be expected to deliver a formal lecture to the residency on a clinical topic and be involved in other teaching opportunities such as journal club throughout the year. The fellow will receive direct feedback and guidance from the fellowship faculty and be expected to develop a teaching portfolio.

Research

The fellow will gain an understanding of emergency medicine research methodology, study design and outcome measurements. This will occur through didactic lectures at the fellowship and departmental level. Under the mentorship of the fellowship faculty, the fellow is expected to develop an educational research project for which they will obtain IRB approval and submit an abstract to one of the following conferences: ACEP, SAEM, CORD. In order to qualify for the SAEM Education Scholarship Fellowship certificate, the fellow must complete the specific authorship requirements. Learn more about the requirements.

Medical Education Administration

All fellows will gain experience in both undergraduate and graduate medical education administration. They may choose to further tailor their learning with a focus on UME or GME based on their career goals and will have the title of either Interim Assistant Clerkship Director or Interim Assistant Program Director during their fellowship year. All fellows will serve on the Department of Emergency Medicine's Educational Executive Committee and Clinical Competency Committee. They will also take part in the residency and be involved in the residency selection process and medical student assessment and feedback.
