This intensive one week course in June at the beautifully situated Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory is titled "Origins of Renal Physiology for Medical Students". Sponsored by the American Society of Nephrology. The course is designed to engender an understanding of and appreciation for major physiological mechanisms related to kidney function. The course provides students with the opportunity to conduct hands-on research using invertebrates, fish, amphibians, and mammals. Working in teams, medical and PhD students generate, interpret and present data relevant to renal physiology. The Zeidel lab runs a module on Water homeostasis that examines how the kidney and epithelia in the nephron fine-tune our total body water content.
