Yu lab shines light on the role of fat tissue directly regulating bladder function via adipose hormones

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are strongly associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes but the reasons remain unclear. Weiqun Yu and his post-doctoral fellow Dr. Zhaobo Luo (pictured) have just published intriguing data in the journal JCI Insight, demonstrating that the fat hormone adiponectin, directly regulates bladder smooth muscle contractility and that mice lacking adiponectin have LUTS. This new and compelling hypothesis directly links obesity to LUTS and may point the way to new therapeutic approaches.
