What is GDPR?
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a European Union (EU) law regarding data protection and privacy applicable to both the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA). The United Kingdom (UK), despite leaving the EU, also adopted the law separately.
Who is covered by GDPR?
The law covers personal data for all people physically present in the EU, EEA and UK (citizenship is not required). It is applicable to data collected before the GDPR (if it is being re-used in research), and it is also applicable to those collaborating with researchers in these locations.
Does GDPR only impact research?
GDPR impacts both research and clinical care.
What is the substance of GDPR?
The GDPR provides special protection to certain categories of data (such as criminal history, religious and political beliefs and affiliations, sexual orientation) and outlines the “right to erasure”- that is, to have personal data removed from research studies and organizational records in certain circumstances.
