Colorectal Surgery Fellowship

About Our Program

Affiliated with Harvard Medical School, the Division of Colorectal Surgery at BIDMC offers a 12-month ACGME-Accredited Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship. During their tenure the fellow will be exposed to the full range of diseases of the colon, rectum and anus. The division has a strong interest in inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Our Rectal Cancer Program, the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and the Pelvic Floor Program are some of the highest volume programs in the region.

The majority of the abdominal cases are performed with minimally invasive access (standard laparoscopy, single site laparoscopy, robotic surgery) and for selective rectal cases Transanal Endoscopic Micro Surgery (TEMS), Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS) and Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision are used.

The expected annual volume for each fellow is approximately 350 abdominal (60% or more are laparoscopic, 20% percent of which are robotic) and 350 anorectal cases. The fellow will be exposed to more than 50 robotic cases per year. Transanal endoscopic microsurgery and transanal minimally invasive surgery are routinely performed for rectal polyps or early cancers. The service performs both fiber optic and rigid proctosigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. The fellow will have the opportunity to perform 150 colonoscopies and 100 sigmoidoscopies.

There is a full complement of fellows and medical students on the Colon and Rectal Surgery service. The Colon and Rectal Surgery fellow will be part of the team and interact with the other fellows and medical students on a daily basis.

At least one research project will be completed during the fellow’s 12-month tenure and will be presented at the ASCRS meeting.
