Urologic Surgery Fellowship

About Our Program

The Division of Urology is dedicated to training the next generation of urologists through its Esta and Robert Epstein Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery.

Accredited by the Endourology Society and established in 2009 by Andrew A. Wagner, MD, Chief of Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery at BIDMC, this fellowship was the first such academic program in New England.

The fellowship program trains urologists in advanced techniques in minimally invasive urologic cancer surgery, and offers a wealth of opportunities for teaching and research. It is a unique training program, offering fellows exposure to several hundred laparoscopic and robotic surgery cases per year.

Fellows spend one to two years focusing on advanced surgical techniques (much of which is robotic kidney, prostate and bladder surgery) and conducting urologic research. Fellows also complete a seven-week intensive training program in clinical effectiveness (biostatistics, epidemiology, health outcomes) through the Harvard School of Public Health.

Fellows play a major role in teaching urology residents and medical students throughout the year in the operating room, the Carl J. Shapiro Simulation and Skills Center, outpatient clinics and didactic lectures.

Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows are well-prepared to establish minimally invasive urologic programs at other institutions, continuing BIDMC's tradition of innovative clinical care, teaching and research.

The fellowship is supported, in part, by a major gift from Esta and Robert Epstein as well as donations from grateful patients and others who are committed to Urology's educational mission.

BIDMC Urology Anki Deck

The BIDMC Urology faculty has collaborated with the Urology Student Anki Group to create an Anki question deck designed to help medical students prepare for sub-internships and PGY-1 year. Anki is a flashcard app used to learn and study new material. The BIDMC Urology Anki question deck covers core urologic concepts for medical students across the spectrum of urologic conditions, including urologic emergencies, BPH, erectile dysfunction, voiding dysfunction, UTIs, pediatrics, and nephrolithiasis.
