Continuous Professional Development

The purpose of the Nurse Anesthetist Continuous Professional Development (CPD) initiative is to strengthen the quality and safety of anesthesia care in Liberia by assuring access to locally relevant and affordable lifelong learning for Liberian nurse anesthesia providers. Currently, access to professional development after graduation from a nurse anesthesia training program is uneven at best and dependent on foreign entities.  Anesthesia is highly specialized and the evidence that underpins anesthesia best practice is rapidly changing.  A structured CPD initiative can help address knowledge gaps, ensuring that nurse anesthesia providers in Liberia can deliver safe and effective anesthesia care, ultimately improving patient outcomes and enhancing the overall healthcare system.  The Liberian Ministry of Health-Liberian Board for Nursing and Midwifery, International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists (IFNA) and the International Council of Nurses (ICN) guidelines and standards recognize the importance of CPD activities to assure the ongoing competency of nurse anesthetists. 

This initiative will be developed and implemented as a partnership with the Liberian Association of Nurse Anesthetists (LANA), Nursing Online Liberia and BAAC.  Lana, under the leadership of Mehnpeine Dolo, CRNA, RN, BAS is the sole professional organization in Liberia that represents the nurse anesthesia workforce and is well positioned to understand the needs of these clinicians in relation to CPD topics. Nursing Online Liberia, under the leadership of Shirley Fahnbulleh, RN, BSN, MS, is the first group in Liberia to be authorized by the Liberian Board for Nursing and midwifery to issue Continuing Education Units. This exciting partnership will increase the value added for the CPD Courses added.
