Dr. Hill studied the cellular effects of cystic fibrosis mutations for his doctorate at the University of Adelaide in Australia. Following a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. Ray Frizzell at the University of Pittsburgh, he moved into studying epithelial membrane biophysics with Dr. Mark Zeidel, then Chair of Medicine at University of Pittsburgh Medical School. This research was focused on understanding epithelial barrier function in a range of experimental systems including the mammalian bladder. Now he is working to understand mechanisms of bladder disease.
Dr. Hill’s research focuses on:
(i) the integrin family of mechanoreceptors in the bladder with a view to understanding how we sense ‘fullness’
(ii) bladder pathology in diabetes,
(iii) using machine learning to decode age-specific and disease-related patterns from mouse urination profiles on filter paper
(iii) the role of surface glycosaminoglycans as a barrier on the surface of the bladder epithelium (the urothelium)
