Dr. Verstegen's primary research interest is to study the neural control of bladder function. This underexplored field will benefit from a better understanding of how the nervous system controls bladder detrusor muscle and sphincter activity. She is currently a lead investigator in several research projects that focus on identifying neural populations involved in successful bladder functioning, their regulation by upstream targets and circuits, and whether inhibitory input to this void-triggering pathway may allow urinary continence. These studies aim to better understand how forebrain, brainstem and spinal inputs converge in the control of bladder filling and voiding.
