Musculoskeletal health in Indigenous populations

Our team collaborates on the Tsimane Health and Life History Project to investigate how lifestyle, physical activity, and diet influence musculoskeletal health across the lifespan. Studying the Tsimane—an Indigenous forager-horticulturalist population in the Bolivian Amazon—provides unique insights into skeletal aging in the absence of many modern risk factors. By integrating imaging, anthropometric, and biochemical assessments, we aim to identify the biological and behavioral determinants of bone and muscle preservation with age, offering perspectives that inform strategies to promote healthy aging worldwide.
