BIDMC offers innovative, intensive and comprehensive care for Huntington's disease (HD) throughout the course of the disease. We have been designated a Center of Excellence by the Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA). This designation recognizes our commitment to high-quality, comprehensive care and access to clinical research for Huntington's disease.
Experts from the Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center at BIDMC are leaders in the diagnosis, management and research of Atypical Parkinsonian Syndromes. We have been designated a Center of Excellence by Mission MSA (formerly the Multiple System Atrophy Coalition). This award recognizes our commitment to comprehensive multi-disciplinary clinical care and support services for MSA patients and their families.
BIDMC is a leader in the diagnosis and treatment of dystonia, a rare movement disorder characterized by excessive pulling of muscles, leading to twisting movements or abnormal postures. Dystonia may be treated with a combination of oral medications, botulinum toxin injections (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport and Myobloc), speech therapy, physical therapy and more.
Deep brain stimulation is an approved treatment for patients with tremors, dystonia and Parkinson's disease when medications are no longer adequate. DBS uses a surgically implanted device called a neurostimulator — similar to a heart pacemaker — to deliver electrical stimulation to targeted areas in the brain that control movement.
Essential tremor is a common movement disorder that usually affects the arms or hands. Living with tremor can be frustrating and even disabling at times. Daily activities such as dressing, feeding, and writing become can become difficult to perform. Our team of specialists is here to help.
