Parkinson's Disease Program

Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder that affects an estimated 1.5 million Americans. At BIDMC, our neurologists coordinate treatment and care with a multidisciplinary team of experts — including physical therapists, sleep specialists, social work and more — to meet the physical, cognitive and emotional needs of you and your caregivers.

Our Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder Center is proud to be a Parkinson's Foundation Center of Excellence. This award acknowledges our excellence in comprehensive care, research, community outreach, and education — all hallmarks of a leading-edge PD program. We are committed to maximizing your quality of life by optimizing your health and keeping you connected and informed.

Parkinson's Programs

Our PD and Movement Disorders Center is proud to be on the leading edge, not only in diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson's and similar illnesses, but in the study of new ways to help patients manage their disease. Our WellnessWorks Program consists of movement classes and educational/support programs intended to help those with Parkinson's live a healthy life.

Visit our WellnessWorks page here.

BIDMC Parkinson's disease patients are eligible to participate in a half-day of back-to-back visits with their established neurologist and choice to subspecialists.

Some patients with Parkinson's disease benefit from a surgical treatment known as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). However, the treatment is not for everyone. Your symptoms, past response to medication, your age, and your ability to come to the hospital for frequent follow-up visits, are some of the factors that you and your doctor will consider before deciding if you might benefit from this procedure.

Our PD and Movement Disorders center hosts several educational events for patients/care partners throughout the year, including an annual Parkinson's Disease Patient and Care Partner Symposium. View our events page to see a calendar of upcoming programs.

To help new patients navigate their Parkinson's disease diagnosis, we have established a collection of internal and external resources. While these resources are a great starting point for new patients, they may be helpful to all Parkinson's patients and care partners.

Our Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center actively participates in multi-center clinical trials evaluating new treatments for PD. Patients can also enroll in observational and at-home research studies. We are members of the Parkinson Study Group and a Parkinson's Foundation Center of Excellence.
