BIDMC OBGYN Residency Training Program at Harvard Medical School

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) at BIDMC is part of a vibrant community with some of the world's most accomplished physicians and researchers. As a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital, our residents and faculty practice evidence-based medicine with leading-edge treatments, while maintaining the common threads of humanity, compassion, respect and equity that define our OB/GYN program. Our department takes great pride in cultivating the next generation of obstetricians-gynecologists to become academicians, educators, clinicians, global health experts, community leaders, or researchers.

Our distinctive blend of academic rigor and individualized care are what make our program unique. The residency offers unique opportunities to provide clinical care in the community through our network of community health centers, where residents can establish their own continuity clinic. Residents also have the option to complete a global health elective through the Botswana-Harvard Partnership with our affiliate, the Scottish Livingstone Hospital.

Innovative Surgical Training

Nestled in the heart of Boston's Longwood Medical Area, BIDMC trainees have opportunities to take advantage of off-site surgical rotations that complement traditional curriculum, with innovative technologies and programs at their fingertips. We offer global and community health tracks, a resident-as-teacher program and unique teaching methodologies such as simulation to support the learning environment. Our clinical volume speaks for itself — with our residents participating in all of our 5,300 deliveries. Academic research projects are strongly supported through call-free elective time and expert scientific consultation for clinical study design, statistical analysis and Institutional Board Review approval.

Our gynecological surgical services span an array of open, laparoscopic, and robotic surgery through our benign and minimally invasive gynecology, urogynecology, and gynecologic-oncology divisions. Our Carl J. Shapiro Simulation Center is a remarkable resource that is available to our residents day and night, not only to further one's surgical expertise, but also to provide simulation for less common scenarios such as maternal cardiac-arrest or eclampsia, operative assisted vaginal deliveries, shoulder dystocia, and multidisciplinary teamwork and communication.
