Fellowship and Education

IBD Fellowship

The treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis) has changed significantly in the last 10 years. Advances in pharmacologic therapies, imaging modalities and molecular markers have revolutionized management of patients with these conditions. This has been reflected in the development of Centers of Excellence and dedicated scientific meetings to assist gastroenterologists in caring for this patient population. A number of tertiary referral centers have now established sub-specialty fellowships in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) to allow trainees with an interest in these conditions to obtain appropriate skills in managing these complex diseases. As a major Center of Excellence in IBD, BIDMC has one the largest IBD clinical practices in this region, with over 4,000 patients seen here. Although we have mentored a small number of trainees with a research interest in IBD, we have not provided interested fellows with an opportunity for formal structured training in IBD.

The goal of this program is to develop and mentor fellows to become academic gastroenterologists with expertise in the management of patients with IBD. Graduates of the program will be prepared for a career as an academic gastroenterologist with an interest in IBD. This program has been reviewed and recognized by the BIDMC General Education Committee.
