Samantha Rizzo, MD

PGY-3

I grew up in Swampscott, MA, just north of Boston. I went to college in Maine at Colby College, where I played varsity soccer and majored in Psychology (Neuroscience). A blood clot diagnosis at the beginning of my junior year of college cut my soccer career short, but this experience inspired me to study thrombosis and discover the world of classical hematology.

I completed a gap year at the Thrombosis Research Group of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, studying diagnosis, prevention, and management of blood clots. I moved to Washington, DC, for medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine. At Georgetown, I was a Health Justice scholar, and through this longitudinal track I was able to study health policy and medical legal partnerships as a tool for change. I was also involved in mentorship and was the president of the Outdoors Club.

As a fourth-year medical student, I completed an away rotation at BIDMC and was instantly drawn to the program. The interns and residents I met were so kind, welcoming, and always made sure I knew where to go (and where to get lunch!) I loved the focus on medical education and knew I wanted to train here because of the collaborative, compassionate environment.

During residency, I am constantly inspired by my coresidents. I learn from them each day and I never feel alone - everyone is always eager and willing to help. We have incredible attending who are gifted teachers. As someone interested in Heme/Onc, I have had access to wonderful research mentors, the ability to rotate on multiple solid and liquid heme services, and plenty of elective time to explore additional interests. I have no doubt when I am a fellow next year, BIDMC will have prepared me well for the next phase of my training and beyond!

Outside of residency, I enjoy staying active on my peloton, embarking on health walks to explore the city and various parks nearby, spending time with family, and discovering new restaurants with my fiancé, Thomas (pictured below).
