Postdoctoral position in liver pathobiology
Overview
A postdoctoral research position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Andrew Duncan in the Department of Pathology and McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to participate in an NIH-funded project related to liver pathobiology. Polyploidy is a defining feature of the liver where polyploid hepatocytes represent half of hepatocytes in humans and as many as 90% in mice. Although polyploid hepatocytes have been recognized for over 100 years, the functional role of these cells is poorly understood. We previously showed that regenerating polyploid hepatocytes undergo specialized cell divisions to form aneuploid daughter cells, generating genetic diversity within the liver. We also found that a subset of aneuploid cells were resistant to chronic liver injury and could even promote liver regeneration.
Current projects seek to understand
(a) how diploid and polyploid hepatocytes respond to acute injury;
(b) the role of cell polarity in regulation of mitotic fidelity; and
(c) mechanisms of liver adaptation to chronic injury.
Requirements
The postdoctoral research position involves working with cell lines, experimental mice, and primary human cells/tissue. Experiments will require proficiency in animal surgeries, cell isolation, molecular techniques, flow cytometry, and microscopy. The candidate will present findings at scientific conferences, publish work in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and assist in grant applications. Applicants must possess a PhD or MD and should have a broad background in tissue biology. Experience and skills with cellular and molecular biology techniques, as well as mouse models is required. Prior experience with cell purification, rodent surgeries, flow cytometry, and microscopy is preferred.
