Continuity Practice Sites

In addition to the sites listed below, we have arranged continuity practice experiences for residents with a focused interest in other areas, including geriatrics, sexual and gender minority health, HIV medicine, and community health.

Healthcare Associates: Our hospital-based teaching practice is located in the Shapiro Clinical Center on the BIDMC East Campus. Over 50 clinician educator faculty practice alongside medical residents and serve as their preceptors. Faculty have expertise in chronic disease management, HIV medicine, women's health, minority health, addiction medicine, geriatrics, and preventive medicine. Physicians work closely with nurse practitioners, mental health therapists, and community resource specialists to provide multidisciplinary care. Residents are preferentially assigned to a general medicine preceptor with similar interests.

Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) Primary Care - Lexington: This is one of our top-rated sites by the residents! Lexington is a mid-sized Boston suburb about 30 minutes north of the Longwood Medical Area, where a small group of community-based clinician educators provide primary care to a wide age spectrum. This site would require a car.

Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) Primary Care - Chelsea: This site is a beloved site by residents and Harvard medical students. Chelsea is a border town that feels more like an extension of Boston rather than a distinct suburb. The population is densely Spanish speaking; many residents will go here for an immersive experience with medical Spanish. This site would either require a car, or use of the mid-day shuttle and a ride-sharing service on the way home.

Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) Primary Care - Brookline: This is also a beloved site by the residents. Residents work with members of the BILH Primary Care leadership team and Director of Quality Improvement, who are practicing physicians at this site. This site is walkable or easily accessible on the T.

Bowdoin Street Community Health Center: Located in Dorchester (a neighborhood of Boston), this clinic site functions as a patient-centered medical home, providing wrap-around services for a diverse group of under-resourced patients including immigrants and patients with limited English proficiency. This site is one of our most popular sites among residents and is accessible by public transportation or car.

Fenway Health: Located in Fenway (a neighborhood of Boston), this clinic site provides nationally recognized expertise in sexual and gender minority health and HIV medicine. This site is also popular among our primary care residents and is walkable from the hospital.

Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates: A large multispecialty practice affiliated with BIDMC with sites throughout the Boston area, each with its own distinct patient population. HVMA offers a chance to experience a large private practice network with an emphasis on population health. Some sites are accessible by walking or public transportation, and others by car.

Veterans Administration Clinic, West Roxbury: One of our most highly rated primary care clinic sites, the VA in West Roxbury is a state-of-the-art primary care practice with expertise in managing a wide variety of chronic illnesses in an older adult population. The VA has outstanding resources including embedded mental health care, clinical pharmacists, diabetes educators, and a variety of other supports. The majority of patients are men, however, residents can supplement their training with additional dedicated women's health experiences. This site would require a car.

Veterans Administration Clinic, Jamaica Plain: Located in Jamaica Plain (a nearby neighborhood of Boston), this clinic site provides care for a similar population as the West Roxbury VA, though the practice also provides care for a patient population with a higher prevalence of hepatitis C infection and a history of substance abuse. Residents who have their primary continuity clinic at the VA often complement their experience by participating in a women's health elective. The site is accessible by walking or public transportation.

Dimock Community Health Center: Located in Roxbury (a nearby neighborhood of Boston), this clinic site provides care for primarily African American and Latinx patients with a variety of chronic medical issues. The clinic offers special services for addiction management and HIV infection. It is accessible by public transportation or car.

Charles River Community Health Center: There are two clinic locations, one in Allston-Brighton (a neighborhood in Boston) and another in Waltham (a smaller city located near Boston). The clinic sites provide access to affordable and culturally and linguistically appropriate primary care health services for underserved patient populations in these communities. The Allston-Brighton site is accessible by public transportation or car; the Waltham site would require a car.

BIDMC Gerontology Clinic: Located at One Brookline Place, this clinic site provides holistic care for adults ages 65 and older. Residents work with a multidisciplinary team of geriatricians, geriatric nurse practitioners, geriatric psychiatrists, and social workers. This site is walkable from the hospital.

Firefly Health: Firefly Health is an innovative primary care start-up practice that provides virtual primary care to patients via video and chat services. The healthcare team consists of physicians, nurse practitioners, a health guide, and a behavioral health specialist. While patient care is provided virtually, the practice holds team meetings at their Watertown location to discuss patient care and practice innovation. Transportation to Watertown would require a car.
